ENTRIES

1. An entry fee will be charged in all divisions except Special Groups. A fee will also be charged for “display only” entries.
2. Entry Limit – Limit two (2) entries per exhibitor per lot number, however, exhibitors may not receive more than one ribbon or prize or prize money per lot. If an exhibit consists of a set, it will be considered one exhibit.
3. Commercial and professional exhibitors will be allowed to enter in all classes.
4. Craft exhibits made from kits must be declared as a kit.
5. The Fair will not be responsible for exhibits left after September 22nd.
6. Large exhibit items will be accepted only if there is sufficient exhibit space. Prior arrangement should be made with the Department Supervisor.
7. Every article which is to be hung must be securely mounted and ready to be hung with wire or hanger attached. All items entered in Paper Arts must be framed or mounted on foam core board for display. This also includes children and junior entries. All paintings, drawings, photos, etc. MUST be entered in Fine Arts or Photography Departments.
8. Articles entered for competition MUST BE THE COMPLETE WORK OF THE EXHIBITOR AND NOT PREVIOUSLY ENTERED IN THE UTAH STATE FAIR.
9. All items must be clean & in like new condition. Soiled items will be disqualified.
10. Any exhibit which would qualify for entry in any other Department will not be accepted in the Creative Arts Dept. Any item entered which would be competently judged in another Department will be transferred to that Department and appropriate entry fee must be paid prior to judging. If that exhibitor submitted a similar entry already in that Department, their second entry may be refused or disqualified and entry fees will not be refunded.
11. No written works – poetry, journals, stories, music, etc. – will be accepted in the Creative Arts Department.
12. The Miscellaneous lot in classes can only be used for an entry which does not, cannot, or will not fit in any other lot in that or any other class or in any other Department.

JUDGING

1. The judge is instructed not to award premiums unless the articles are deemed worthy of merit. If no competition exists and an article is not worthy of first premium, the judge may award second or third premium according to his judgment.
2.All articles entered in any of the miscellaneous lots will be judged against each other and only one first place, one second place, and one third place will be given, if deemed worthy by the judge.
3. Judges will make sure not to award ties in any lot.
4. All judging will be done by the American System.
5. The right is reserved to reject any entry deemed unsuitable for exhibition, or infringes on copyright.
6. All articles will be subject to approval before entry by the department supervisor.
7. Any modification of entry rules due to unusual circumstances will be approved only by the Board of Directors.

GENERAL

1. The management will use the utmost care to secure the safety of articles after their arrival and placement.
2. It is NOT necessary for exhibitors to have entered in a county fair before entering into the State Fair.
3. Supervisors and department workers will be allowed to enter exhibits for display only. Judges may enter only in areas where they are not judging.
4. The right is reserved to reject any entry deemed unsuitable for exhibition, or infringes on copyrights.
5. All articles will be subject to approval before entry by the department supervisor.

PREMIUMS

An exhibitor cannot receive more than one award in any lot. The following awards will be made in each division.

BEST IN SHOW AWARDS

Best in Show winners must forfeit the 1st place prize money on their Best in Show entry.

One award offered in each class – except three awards offered in scrapbooks (one in FA, one in FB, and one in FC) and two in Miscellaneous classes for the following divisions:

  • Professional - $25 & a special award
  • Advanced - $20 & a special award
  • Amateur - $15 & a special award
  • Senior Citizen - $15 & special award

Judges may select up to ten awards in the Junior Division and one in the Children and Disabled Division (all classes competing):

  • Junior - $10 & a special award

SPECIAL AWARDS

1. Grand Prize Award - $60, Rosette & a Special Award
Awarded to the best exhibit in entire show, selected from the various Best In Show awards. Selection to be made by the judges and the department supervisor. This award will be in addition to the Best In Show award.

2. People’s Choice - $25, Rosette & a Special Award
Voting will take place September 10th through the 15th and the award will be placed on September 16th.

Class F – Scrapbooking and Paper Crafts

1. Exhibitors are limited to entering two (2) layouts in each lot (not previously entered at the Utah State Fair). A layout consists of either one or two 8 ½” x 11” or 12” x 12” flat or shadow box scrapbook pages. (Shadow box scrapbook pages must be able to fit in a scrapbook binder.) To be considered a scrapbook entry, photo and journaling must be included, as part of the entry.

2. Name, address and phone number of exhibitor must be written on the back of each page.

3. Each flat page must be submitted in its entirety within a plastic sheet protector. Do not have any flaps or windows protruding. Be advised – due to the method used to display entries, sheet protectors may not be reusable. Dimensional scrapbook pages must also be completely enclosed.

4. Entries should not exceed 1/4" thickness.

Class FB is for pages generated on the computer. All items including the photos must be computer generated. All lot numbers in Class FA apply for this area but do not compete with Class FA lots.

FC – Scrapbooks (including digital scrapbooks)

Class FC is for all scrapbooks, both mini and full sized. Books will be judged as a complete and total scrapbook and will be displayed with one page showing or with just the cover of the scrapbook showing depending on space and ability to protect the album. Albums will not be handled by the general public. Specialty shape chipboard books will also be entered and judged in Class FC and will be displayed according to space available and ability to protect the entire book.

Class H – Dolls

All dolls should have been made within the last 2 years. Exceptions need approval of the doll supervisor. Doll must be placed securely on proper stands or props – tied in! Children’s clothes are not appropriate for dolls. All add-ons or accessories should be attached securely or points will be deducted. See the Home Arts Department for handmade dolls and toys of yarn or fabric, doll costumes made of fabric, knit or crochet, and doll pillows.

Class KA – Fluid Art

1. Fluid Acrylic Paint Pouring is a painting method that uses acrylic paint and pouring medium to create an organic free form painting with rich, vibrant swirls and cells of color.

2. All entries must be COMPLETELY DRY. Items will NOT be accepted if not TOTALLY DRY!

3. Entry must be framed and ready for hanging. If you prefer you may bring a free standing or table easel to have your art work displayed on. Please have your name on your easel.

4. For hanging, use adequate weight-bearing, woven picture wire ONLY. Wire should be anchored to frame sides 1/3 down from top of frame. No clamp plastic, glass frames or “poster frames.” Metal frames must have wires. Saw-tooth hangers are acceptable on frames 4 x 6 or smaller and only if wire is not possible.

Class Q – Ceramics

Exhibitors must comply with all other Creative Arts Department requirements.

1. Each piece must be the complete work of exhibitor from greenware stage (excluding porcelain blanks and contemporary bisque) and must never have been entered in a previous Utah State Fair. All entries must be kiln fired at 1000 degrees Fahrenheit or more.

2. Each piece must have name and/or initials of person completing piece, and date started etched into greenware. Any exceptions need to be cleared with the ceramic supervisor.

3. Ceramic entry must be completed at least 75% in the technique described in the lot number. Duplication of techniques will not be placed in the miscellaneous category.

4. A number will be assigned to each article by the Fair ceramic committee at the time of entry and the exhibitor will be given the corresponding claim check to reclaim the piece at the end of the show. All entries must remain on exhibition for the entire duration of the show.

5. It is strongly recommended that plates and plaques have suitable stands. Lace figurines must be mounted on suitable bases or boards.

6. Accessories such as lampshades, etc. are encouraged to make more interesting displays and exhibit ceramic item as attractively as possible. Dark material to display mother of pearl items and clear or white glaze are also encouraged.

7. Entries with loose parts must be securely fastened together to withstand handling and examination i.e. lids taped on, etc. However, the judges are permitted to open and examine the piece.

8. Entries which cannot be completely examined by the judges will be disqualified. Weighted chess sets, bookends and tile mosaic pieces secured to a background are the only exceptions to the above. There should be no felt on the bottom of pieces. Pieces permanently attached to bases will be accepted.

9. Reasonable safety and handling precautions will be exercised by Fair personnel, but the Fair assumes no liability for loss or breakage.

10. All exhibitors must be residents of the State of Utah or a student currently enrolled in a Utah educational facility.

11. Seminar pieces will be accepted ONLY if the instructor did not do any work on the piece.

Department

CA1 – Professional: Anyone who owns or operates a ceramic studio, sells finished ware, teaches in a licensed shop or is certified by any ceramic product company as a teacher.

CA2 – Advanced: Anyone who does not sell ceramics, but has been doing ceramics for a period of 5 years or longer and does not fall, by description, into the Professional category.  

CA3 – Amateur: Any adult ceramicist having less than 5 years of experience and does not, by definition, fall into the Professional category.

CA4 – Senior Citizen: Age 62 and over

CA5 – Junior: Age 12 to 18

CA6 – Children: Age 11 and under

CA7 – Disabled: disability must be relevant to the entry. If disability is not declared, entry will be judged in Amateur Division.

Class WA – Digital Art

1. This division is for two-dimensional artwork, created totally through the use of a computer. Photographic images are not allowed. Photographs can be entered in the Photography Department.

2. Components must be original work of the submitting artist.

3. Entry must be framed and ready for hanging. If you prefer you may bring a free standing or table easel to have your artwork displayed on. Please have your name on your easel.

4. For hanging, use adequate weight-bearing, woven picture wire ONLY. Wire should be anchored to frame sides 1/3 down from top frame. No clamp plastic, glass frames or “poster frames.” Metal frames must have wires. Saw-tooth hangers are acceptable on frames 4 x 6 or smaller and only if wire is not possible.

5. All entries must include a brief description of the creative process, general techniques and programs used. Include printing process and/or hand applied enhancements. This is to be turned in with entry form at the time the artwork is entered. The above listed items are necessary in order to have your artwork judged.
